Two pesticide distributors in Puerto Rico have agreed to pay a $210,000 fine as part of a settlement with the federal government after they were accused of violating laws regarding a toxic pesticide that nearly killed a U.S. family in the neighboring U.S. Virgin Islands.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Thursday that Superior-Angran LLC and Superior Angran Caribbean Inc. also agreed to train pesticide applicators.
Superior-Angran was accused of buying, storing and selling methyl bromide without complying with reporting and record-keeping requirements. Superior Angran Caribbean was accused of exporting the pesticide without meeting reporting requirements.
The federal investigation began after a Delaware family vacationing in St. John was poisoned in March 2015.
