President of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro accused the United States of involvement in a plan to overthrow progressive governments in Latin America, on the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of the US-supported coup in Brazil that overthrew the progressive and democratically elected President Goulart.
“There is a resurgence of a new Operation Condor in our region, that is trying, through non-conventional warfare, to overthrow progressive, revolutionary and leftist governments,” said Maduro.

He stressed that the Operation “serves only the interests of US hegemony.”
The declaration marked 52 years since the US-supported coup d’état against President Joao Goulart, on March 31 1964.
Maduro noted that the coup against the progressive president brought to power a notoriously repressive dictatorship that ruled Brazil between 1964 and 1985.
He also reaffirmed the support of his government for that of Dilma Rousseff in Brazil, and for the Brazilian people, in “this dark period of contemporary history,” and called for the defense of democracy and institutionally in that country, which “is facing antidemocratic forces that threaten republican life.”
