The European Parliament (EP) urged the European Union (EU) to suspends all arms sales to Saudi Arabia for its involvement in the deaths of nearly 6,000 civilians in Yemen.
In a resolution approved by 359 votes in favor, 212 against and 31 abstentions, European lawmakers expressed a “grave concern” about the naval blockade and the airstrikes carried out in Yemen since March 2015 by the Saudi-led coalition forces.
The military campaign in support of Yemeni President Abd-Rabbuh Mansur al Hadi has “caused thousands of deaths and further destabilized the country,” said the European lawmakers.
“It is urgent to establish a ceasefire and to stop attacks on civilians so that humanitarian workers and doctors can help the Yemeni people,” stated the resolution.
