SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Two small commuter trains collided head-on in this Central American capital Friday, sending dozens of people to the hospital.
At least 50 people were injured, according to emergency workers, and some local media outlets said the number was more than 100. But no deaths were reported.
The two-car trains were traveling at a low speed when they collided, according to a rail employee at the scene. Their front ends were crumpled, and some windows were broken.
Officials said human error was most likely responsible for the crash, which took place on a curve about 300 yards (meters) from Costa Rica’s National Stadium west of downtown San Jose.
Video posted online by Teletica news showed emergency workers attending to injured passengers, some with blood on their heads, hands and clothing.
