QUITO, Ecuador — Mexico’s lone representative in the Copa Libertadores, the UNAM Pumas lost Wednesday night 2-1 against Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle in the first leg of semifinals play.
Pumas managed to keep the score close, still maintaining a good opportunity to advance with a win in the second leg match next Tuesday in Mexico City.
Goals for the victors were both the work of José Angulo at 42 and 54 minutes. The Puma’s Ecuadorian player Fidel Martínez scored the Puma’s only goal at 73′.
After this result, the Mexican side needs to win at 1-0 in the second leg to balance the score.
Wednesday night sees the second leg match of Atlético Minero and São Paulo. The previous match saw São Paulo triumph 1-0.
On Thursday night there will be matches between Boca Juniors and Nacional de Uruguay, and Atlético Nacional and Rosario Central. The former matchup was a 1-1 draw during the first leg, the latter was a victory for Rosario, 1-0.
