We never wanted to be at the center — in the way that we are now — of the elections in the United States. But the truth is that, thanks to Donald Trump and the end of a cycle, Mexico is playing a crucial role in the pre-electoral process of our northern neighbor.
Now Joe Biden, the vice president of the United States, is visiting Mexico accompanied by a delegation that includes, among others, the person who may have been ambassador in our country: Roberta Johnson.
Despite what U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says, the fact that Jacobson still hasn’t been named ambassador is an insult to Mexico and also to Barack Obama. It shows a lack of respect for our country which has trascended and is now part of the election in the United States, at least from the Republican side.
Frankly, I don’t think that times are right for that appointment to be approved before the campaign officially starts. And since U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, who has stopped the process, now looks like a rising star in the Republican Party, I have the impression that this appointment will simply not be possible.
But what is indeed possible is to prevent this fact from plunging us into a fit of dignity that makes us feel mistreated, considering everything the United States has done to us, from deportations and detentions to the flagrant and daily humiliation suffered by our millions of compatriots who stay illegal in that country.
However, what I find most strange is the resistance of the Mexican and U.S. powers to accept that we are living in a new time when politics and circumstances have motivations, colors and responses different to those of years past.
In that sense, how far can Trump go? I don’t know. But what I do know is that he represents a clear danger to U.S. interests and it’s not convenient to forget that that country never plays around with its interests.
What will happen to us? One very obvious thing, because Mexicans are under constant attack because our flag, the color of our skin and our passport is becoming a problem because of the confusion experimented by a large part of the U.S. citizens.
In the meantime, I welcome Joe Biden, a sign and a representative of those times when civilization still ruled the empire of the north. But we must also be aware that both Biden and Obama fail to understand what is happening to their country.
