The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) will open the Laboratory for Analysis of Molecules and Biotech Drugs Wednesday, a cutting-edge facility for research in the fight against diseases like cancer, lupus, asthma or multiple sclerosis.
The laboratory is part of the Institute of Biotechnology (IBt) in Cuernavaca, Morelos, and will focus on the production of active ingredientes of drugs for treating ailments such as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, viral infections, osteoporosis, organ rejection and macular degeneration, among others.
The UNAM said in a statement that the purpose of the laboratory is to support the development of new biotechnological molecules in order to facilitate their transition toward clinical evaluations and its final delivery to patients.
Unlike chemical drugs, those created through biotechnology are produced using recombinant DNA technology, which is essential to ensure their quality, effectiveness and safety, said the statement.
