During a presentation in Mexico City, rector of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEM), Jorge Olvera García, said that the book “El Caudillo del Sur: forjador de la nación mexicana” (Commander of the South: Shaper of the Mexican Nation), which was edited by UAEM, is of excellent literary and aesthetic quality. UAEM academics René García Castro and Ana Lidia García Peña edited the publication.
José María Morelos y Pavón is a fundamental figure in understanding Mexican history, especially the country’s foundation and national identity, said Olvera García. The presentation at the Interactive Economy Museum (MIDE) also marked the tenth anniversary of the museum. The Deputy Governor of Mexico’s Central Bank (Banxico), which manages the museum, Manuel Sánchez González, and MIDE’s director Silvia Singer Sochet, presided over the event.
Olvera García said that, “Morelos should be recognized because his set of ideals was the basis for Mexico’s juridical system, national sovereignty, division of powers, abolition of slavery and torture, respect for individual property, free and mandatory education and non-intervention.”
The book is already available in the Institutional Repository, showing UAEM’s commitment to Open Access publications and democratizing knowledge.
Manuel Sánchez González said that “El Caudillo del Sur” is a balanced book that offers elements for a more comprehensive and objective analysis of Morelos. He said that for Banxico it is an honor to participate in the book’s presentation, considering the institution’s historic role in promoting academic and cultural activities.
The Secretary of Research and Advanced Studies at UAEM, Rosario Pérez Bernal, said that according to Banxico, “El Caudillo del Sur” could be one of the best books of 2015, for its contribution to Mexican culture and historiography of Morelos.
