ROME – Former governor of the state of Tamaulipas Tomás Yarrington was captured on Sunday night in Florence, Italy and later transferred to the Sollicciano prison where he will await extradition to Mexico. Italian anti narcotic agents arrested Yarrington at 9 p.m. local time (19:00 GMT) after the former governor denied his identity and provided a false driver’s license under a different name.
The 60-year-old politician was accompanied by a Polish national who has also been placed under arrest pending the resolution of his judicial situation. Yarrington is accused of taking bribes from the Gulf Cartel and The Zetas and laundering money through real estate operations. An Interpol red notice had been issued against him due to an apprehension order by a Tamaulipas court for the charges of drug smuggling and racketeering.
Tomás Yarrington is also under investigation in the United States after a protected witness exposed his links with organized crime groups.
