Storm Hits Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila

The National Weather Service (SMN) said that storm clouds gathered in the area surrounding Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, on Monday night. Areas of Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and Texas were also affected.

The National Water Commission (Conagua) announced via it’s Twitter account that storm clouds formed in the area at around 10.30 p.m.

In a statement, the commission added that strong winds in the northern areas of Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas could develop into storm clouds and tornados. The storm now appears to be heading north towards Texas.

Ciudad Acuña Mayor Evaristo Lenin Pérez Rivera released a video message on his Facebook account, explaining that the worst weather had now passed.

“There is an alert of strong winds north of Del Río, Texas. The storm has now passed, it is no longer near us (in Acuña) and there is nothing to worry about,” he said in the video.

The weather is strongly linked to a channel of low pressure to the north of the country, which has led to heavy rains, electrical storms and winds of up to 70 kilometers per hour.

At this point there are no reported victims.
