Rodolfo López Negrete, head of the Mexican Tourist Promotion Council (CPTM), said that tourism in Mexico grew by 9.5 percent during 2015, which represents more than double the average global growth during the same period, 37 percent.
A balance of the tourism sector was announced and the expectations for it during 2016 were analyzed during the First Regular Session of the Governing Board of the year, led by Tourism Secretary Enrique de la Madrid Cordero.
On behalf of the members of the governing board, De la Madrid Cordero stressed that international tourists arrivals by air managed to triple the world growth rate of tourism in 2015.
Mexico is moving forward in the diversification of markets in order to not rely solely on the performance of the market of the United States and has experienced growth from major markets such as Guatemala, Argentina, South Korea, Costa Rica, Colombia, Chile and China.
Presenting his report to the governing board, De la Madrid Cordero said that hotel occupancy at the end of 2015 stood at 59.6 percent on average in the 70 monitored destinations, achieving a rise of 2.5 percentage points.
The Mexican tourism sector closed 2015 with total earnings amounting of 17.4 billion pesos ($827.4 million).
