Reactions to Monterrey School Shooting

Legislators from the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), New Alliance and Social Encounter Parties (PES) expressed their concern over the tragic events that took place on Wednesday at a school in Monterrey, Nuevo León, where a student fired shots at his teacher and classmates. They called for stronger prevention measures at schools in order to avoid violent acts such as the latter, as well as to assess and bolster existing practices such as “Mochila Segura” (Safe Backpacks).

Vice coordinator of New Alliance deputies Mirna I. Saldívar stated safety for teachers and students is a top priority for the state. “We must prevent kids and teenagers from having access to fire arms,” said Saldívar.

Morena deputy Araceli Damián said these actions are a direct consequence of the generalized violence in the country. Damián added the fact that a minor can carry a weapon and assault his classmates and teacher is troublesome.

PES deputies called for a thorough investigation on the background of the shooter, in order to determine what led him to these actions.
