Zoé Robledo Aburto, a senator from the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), called for making the Firearms and Explosives Law stricter, to prevent a repeat of another accident such as the one on Tuesday at the San Pablito pyrotechnic market in Tultepec, State of Mexico.

Robledo Aburto declared that corruption on the market would be investigated, as a possible factor in the explosion.

“Everything should have been assessed when market opened, with security measures being in place. They were in some way breached, many times, and behind these breaches is corruption and negligence,” said Robledo Aburto. He insisted that the Firearms and Explosives Law be more rigorous to avoid such tragic events in the future.

“Yes, certainly the Arms and Explosives Law should be much more rigorous and restrictive. We cannot think that — while in other parts of the world certain pyrotechnics are prohibited — in Mexico we will be able to do things better, when accidents of this type occur on a recurring basis.”

Robledo Aburto expressed solidarity with the families of the bereaved and injured and demanded punishment for those responsible for this event, which has overshadowed Christmas festivities.
