The current governor of the state of Veracruz, Javier Duarte de Ochoa, will soon send to his state’s congress an initiative to take away his successor Miguel Ángel Yunes Linares’ political immunity, known as “fuero” (jurisdiction). Yunes Linares won the state elections last Sunday June 5.
In response, the next governor’s son, National Action Party (PAN) senator Fernando Yunes Márquez, spoke out against what he considered a “cynical” initiative to reform Veracruz’s constitution.
The senator criticized the initiative stating that Duarte de Ochoa himself has been been shielding himself with his immunity, to avoid the law proceeding against him for the alleged crimes he has committed.
“It is a cynical attitude. (…) I believe that what Duarte is looking for is to save face, but it is too late. (…) What the next governor must do is to do justice (…) and the verdict of the votes was perfectly clear and during the campaign as well, jail for Duarte, jail for all his officials that diverted public funds, that put organized crime into the police, that is what people want.”
The member of the PAN also filed complaints to the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Crime Committed by Public Servants of Veracruz, as well as the national and state Human Rights Commissions, against Veracruz’s Public Security Secretary for being held illegally by police last Sunday, in the state’s city of Coatzacoalcos.
