Senator Fernando Yunes Márquez asked the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) to be imparcial as it investigates Veracruz Governor Javier Duarte for crimes of corruption Wednesday. Duarte is accused of various crimes, including theft of public funds and resources.

Yunes Márquez, a member of the National Action Party (PAN) who represents the state of Veracruz in the Senate, said that it is important for Attorney General Arely Gómez to investigate the case and determine if crimes have been committed and if Duarte should face criminal or administrative penalties.

“We want the PGR to act in a professional manner, to act quickly, so that Veracruz can get justice,” said Yunes Márquez.

Yunes Márquez, who is chair of the Senate’s Justice Committee, also asked the leadership of Duarte’s Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) to prove its anticorruption credentials by expelling Duarte.
