Rafael Pacchiano, head of the Natural Resources and Environmental Secretariat (Semarnat), said that the environmental authorities will have to present the new plan to implement during environmental contingencies in Mexico City within 15 days.
Among the measures which will be implemented through the new strategy is the use of new technology in the vehicle verification centers, changes to the Hoy No Circula program (anenvironmental program intended to improve the air quality of Mexico City), and changes to the limits of pollutant levels needed to activate the contingency alarm.
The new regulations of the Hoy No Circula program will be implemented starting from the second half of the year. The government of Mexico City is working with the Health Secretariat in order to determine the contamination levels needed to activate the alert, so that vehicle circulation decreases in the city.
Also, public and freight transport will now undergo vehicle verification, said Pacchiano.
