Between 2013 and 2015, at least 402 women were murdered in Mexico City, which represents three gender-related murders per week. Furthermore, that figure is increasing, according to Mexico City Congress (ALDF) deputy Beatriz Rojas, of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena).

Rojas added that violence against women is most common in the boroughs of Álvaro Obregón, Cuauhtémoc, Milpa Alta and Xochimilco. Many perpetrators are husbands or boyfriends of victims.

The deputy said in a press conference that seven women have been murdered in March of this year in Mexico City, but in the majority of these cases there have been no investigations.

Rojas demanded a report about sexual crimes and violence against women from the Mexico City Attorney General, Rodolfo Ríos Garza, about the government’s procedures for these crimes.

She also asked the mayor of Mexico City, Miguel Ángel Mancera Espinosa, to guarantee the city’s women a life free of violence.

Rojas noted that many judges and police officers do not have a gender perspective, and continue to see women as dependent o men.

She also considers it important to study the condition of women to determine if a “gender alert” is necessary.

“We are not going to wait around and let violence increase,” she said.

She also asked the Mexico City Women’s Institute to provide information about psychological and legal resources available to people affected by gender violence.

We are not going to wait around and let violence increase.”
