Four years after the education reform came into effect, it has proven to be an absolute failure since neither the teacher’s wages nor the quality of education have improved, said Araceli Damián.
Damián, deputy and parliamentary leader of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), noted her disbelief in the government’s capability to break down the National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE). She added the group still has momentum and it is imperative to stop it in order to strengthen Mexico’s education system.
The Morena deputy also criticized Public Education Secretary Aurelio Nuño as being ill-prepared for his position. She said the new administration starting on 2018 has no obligation to continue with the reforms established during the present administration.
Araceli Damián expressed her support for the teacher’s strike and stated that it will be difficult to end the movement since most of the teachers are members of the same union.
In honor of Teacher’s Day, CNTE members are asking the federal government to repeal the education reform.
