Senators of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), National Action Party (PAN) and Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) considered that it was necessary to extradite Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera to the United States.
PRD Parliamentary Coordinator Miguel Barbosa Huerta stated that the extradition was appropriate due to the weakness of the Mexican prison system.
Barbosa Huerta also said that the Mexican government has nothing to celebrate, because it wasn’t able to prosecute Guzmán Loera nor was it capable of guaranteeing his imprisonment.
Fernando Yunes Márquez, President of the Senator’s Committee of Justice, said that the extradition should been done sooner.
“The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) proceeded slow in the beginning. But, sure, the extradition is good news if we consider the risk for the Mexican government posed by keeping him in the country.”
Enrique Burgos García, President of the Constitutional Points Committee, denied that Guzmán Loera’s extradition was a gift to new U.S. president Donald Trump.
Gabriela Cuevas Barrón from PAN noted that this wasn’t the best moment to extradite Guzmán Loera to the United States but she trusts that Trump will understand that cooperation with Mexico is necessary.
