The Legal and International Affairs deputy attorney at the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) Alberto Elías Beltrán, has said that the Mexican government will present a formal request for the extradition of former Veracruz Gov. Javier Duarte de Ochoa to Guatemalan authorities on Wednesday.
He said that all evidence needed has been collected and that the conditions established in the bilateral extradition treaty with that country were met.
Meanwhile, the extradition of former Quintana Roo Gov. Roberto Borge Angulo, could take between six and 12 months, once Mexico submits the formal request to the authorities in Panama, Berltrán explained.
He mentioned that a hearing will now have to be held in an appeals court in order to formally notify the detainee of Mexico’s request. From that date, 60 days are given for request to be filed.
Beltrán said that at that time, the PGR will analyze and submit any other order that may exist against Borge Angulo.
Borge Angulo was detained Sunday night in the Panama airport when he intended to board a commercial flight to Paris, France.
He made it clear that the actions carried out by the Attorney General’s Office have nothing to do with the political situation in Mexico.
