Federal deputy Ivonne Ortega Pacheco requested a leave of absence

Federal deputy Ivonne Ortega Pacheco requested a leave of absence in order to contest for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) candidacy to the 2018 presidential race.  The decision will be voted on Jan. 26 at the Permanent Committee.

The former Yucatán governor also announced on social media her involvement leading a national movement to protest the hike in gasoline prices and to present an initiative to reduce taxes on fuels. Ortega Pacheco said the “gasolinazo” is a terrible blow to all Mexicans and that she “requested the leave of absence to be consistent and side with the people to fight this unfair blow to our economy. The Mexican people should not have to pay for the opening of the market.”

Ortega stated the campaign started on Monday, a nationwide effort to collect signatures to support the initiative through the site HazloporMexico.com.
