Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong instructed the National Commission to Prevent and Eradicate Violence against Women (CONAVIM) to take measures against content that fosters violence against women.
The official stated that any form of communication that fosters violence against women or generates stereotypes is a serious matter and should not be tolerated.
He added that violence against girls and women, in its different types and manners, is one of the human rights violations that is most socially tolerated in the world.
Women tend to be portrayed in campaigns, television show, music videos, adds in the press and other media under diverse stereotypes that foster violence against them.
Due to this, the official stated that the Interior Secretariat expresses its profound rejection of this type of contents, in particular the videoclip from singer Gerardo Ortiz, which clearly invites violence against women, as well as making this social problem seem normal and unimportant.
In this sense, the Secretary called on the media, production companies, publicity agencies, social media users, journalists and society in general, to avoid divulging content that trivializes and promotes violence against women.
Osorio Chong also instructed the CONAVIM to promote measures that contribute to eradicate the use of stereotypes in communication, and the undersecretariat of Media Regulation of the Interior Secretariat to promote programs to raise awareness among those who produce content in the media and divulge information.
Likewise, Osorio Chong asserted the need to promote in a decisive and active manner a culture that guarantees women’s right to a life without violence, as well as reporting to the authorities any acts against this right.
Gender equality starts by changing the way we think, act and communicate. We all have to do our part.”
