Four Dead as Intense Rains in Durango Cause Flooding

The National Defense Secretariat is working to rescue dozens of families that are stranded on the roofs of their houses or vehicles

The federal government is taking various actions to help the government of the state of Durango, which was hit with intense rain Thursday that led to the deaths of four people. One person is missing.

The National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) is working to rescue dozens of families that are stranded on the roofs of their houses or vehicles.

President Enrique Peña Nieto instructed the military, as well as the Interior Secretariat (Segob), to help the victims.

Interior Secretary Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong has ordered General Civil Protection Director Ricardo de la Cruz Musalem to go to Durango to coordinate rescue efforts between different levels of government.

Durango’s Civil Protection Agency and Interior Secretariat agreed to suspend classes at all levels of school in the state. At least 18 schools and development centers will be transformed into refuge centers, which will have a capacity of 1,439 people.

The city government of Durango city, the capital of the state, will participate in the rescue efforts.
