MEXICO CITY — Electoral official Enrique Andrade González said that the National Electoral Institute (INE) will determine a fine for the Citizens’ Movement party (MC) after voter information that had been entrusted to them was leaked on Amazon.
“I think it will be a fine, but I don’t know how much yet,” said Andrade González. “But I think that we will decide before the election.”
He said that the INE’s Technical Unit for Election Conflicts (UTCE) started an ordinary sanction process against MC, which involves determining a punishment. The UTCE will present its proposal to the INE’s General Council.
The UTCE will act independently of the Electoral Crimes Prosecutor’s Office (Fepade), which is also investigating the case.
“Those found responsible could face three to seven years in prison,” said Andrade González.
For the INE, the imposition of sanctions is discretional.
Before presenting a resolution the UTCE allowed representatives from MC to defend themselves.
“The UTCE is taking care of the investigation, and I understand that it is in an advanced stage,” added Andrade González. “We have practically identified a responsible party. I think that we will be able to resolve the issue before the election.”
