President and counselor of the National Electoral Institute (INE) Lorenzo Córdova Vianello stated his disagreement with the proposal presented by Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) to decrease the number of proportional representation seats of deputies (100) and senators (32).

Córdova Vianello claims these types of austerity measures hinder democracy and the current representative system. “I believe we’re facing a historic moment that calls to seek institutional methods that do not affect democratic representation,” said the head of INE; however, he did not rule out the possibility to debate further proposals.

During an interview,  Córdova Vianello announced that on Thursday INE will allocate $1 billion pesos ($48.2 million) – originally intended to build a new headquarters – to the Treasury and Public Finance Secretariat (SHCP) to bolster México’s consular network in the United States to aid Mexican migrants.
