Mario Ernesto Villanueva Madrid was recaptured by Federal authorities at 12:40 p.m. on Wednesday after his repatriation to Mexico. The former governor of Quintana Roo arrived on board of a PRIM flight for repatriates guarded by Interpol agents.
Villanueva Madrid was subject to a medical check-up by experts from the Criminal Investigation Agency and a specialist from the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER).
The spokesman from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) Natalia Briseño said Villanueva will be transferred to a facility in Mexico City but did not specify which one.
Former Mexican Drug Czar and Villanueva’s attorney Mariano Herrán Salvatti said an amparo (Mexican constitutional legal process that protects citizens and their basic rights) has been issued to ensure Villanueva receives medical attention.
