Eva Cadena, the National Regeneration Movement’s (Morena) candidate for mayor of Las Choapas, Veracruz, yesterday declared that she will decline her candidacy after the publication of a video online in which she receives 500,000 pesos ($26,396) in cash that she is supposed to hand over to Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the national leader of the party.

In a radio interview she said, “I will decline my candidacy so as not to affect the image of the party or that of Andrés Manuel. I admit that I made a mistake with that meeting.”

She also said that she is at the disposition of Morena’s Honor and Justice Commission. “It was my turn to be fooled, now I’ll compose myself and am at the party’s disposition. I made an error and I assume the responsibility of this, “she added.

The video shows Cadena receiving wads of cash while listening to the voice of a woman who says that this is money for López Obrador.
