President Enrique Peña Nieto referred to the recent capture of two former governors, Javier Duarte de Ochoa of Veracruz and Tomás Yarrington Ruvalcaba of Tamaulipas, as a clear message that the Mexican government will fight impunity.
“Those who brake the law will have to answer for their actions, and regardless of what the judicial branch decides, these arrests are a strong message from the Mexican government against impunity,” said Peña Nieto.
During the swearing-in ceremony for the new board of directors of the Labor Congress, Peña Nieto recognized the members of all the agencies and units of intelligence and security for their commitment and professionalism that led to these arrests.
Peña Nieto said that the arrests came as the result of cooperation between Mexican institutions and their international counterparts.
In the ceremony, which took place in the Los Pinos presidential residency, Peña Nieto said that these operations alongside those of the National Transparency System (SNT) and the National Anti-Corruption System (SNA) are backed by millions of Mexicans who want to live in a country that protects the rule of law and where citizens have freedoms and rights.
Peña Nieto acknowledged that public servants including himself must “take on the demands that exist both in Mexico and abroad, for a government with integrity and honesty.”
In front of leaders of the various organizations that make up the Labor Congress, Peña Nieto said that there is positive evidence that the country is moving forward.
“It is rarely talked about, but good actions have value, a lot of value, and the honesty and commitment shown by millions of Mexicans everyday is extremely valuable,” Peña Nieto said.
