The National Consortium of Information Science and Technology Resources (Conricyt) of the National Council for Science and Technology (Conacyt) recognized professor and researcher Juan Gabino González Becerril of the Center for Investigation and Advanced Studies of Population at the National Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEM) for his work as editor of the Population Papers publication. It is the second most influential publication in social sciences in the country.
The meeting took place in San Luis Potosí and the general director of Conricyt, Margarita Ontiveros y Sánchez de la Barquera, the adjunct director of Conacyt Planning and Evaluation Víctor Gerardo Carrión Rodríguez and representatives of the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), as well as other digital libraries attended. There were approximately 2,500 researchers, professors and graduate students in attendance at the conference.
González Becerril said that Conacyt recognizes the most influential publications in the country. He said that just in the last year, users downloaded 700,000 files from the publication. The Network of Scientific Journals of Latin America and the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal (Redalyc) reported that 59,000 files from the Population Papers are downloaded monthly.
The publication covers issues of population, including birth rates, death rates, migration, employment, aging, poverty and more. Mexico is the main case study country, but other countries are also represented.
There have been 89 editions of the publication since its inception in 1994. In 2001 it became the first UAEM publication to be included in the Conacyt Registry of Scientific Publications.
