The Executive Commission for the Care of Victims reported that in Mexico, 90 percent of all sexual violence is committed against women and 4 out of every 10 rape victims are girls under 15 years old.
Presenting the results of the “Quantitative Diagnostic of Sexual Violence Care in Mexico,” several specialists noted that most of the sexual abuse committed against minors takes place in locations where the victims feels safe, such as schools or their home. Likewise, the abuser is often a person known to the victim, which is why these crimes are not reported to the authorities, said the president of the Executive Committee for the Care of Victims, Jaime Rincon Rochín.
The report collects statistical information from the Health Secretariat and enforcement institutions of only 16 states in the country, also revealing that in 2010-2015 it recorded more than 83,000 crimes of sexual violence in these 16 states; but if these are multiplied for the total of the states in the country, the figure could rise to 2.8 million and on average per year would be 600,000 recorded sexual offenses.
And for a thousand sexual offenses that are reported, only 10 attackers detained.
Given this situation of injustice, they urged state and local laws to work together with the Federal Law for Victims, as more than 50 percent of the states do not have a special commission to address this crime.
