Following the raid undertaken by Miguel Hidalgo borough City Manager Arne Aus den Ruthen, against alleged sex-workers on the streets of the Verónica Anzures neighborhood, governments departments in favor of human rights manifested their worry about the stigmatization of women due to their appearance.
In a statement the Commission for the Prevention of Discrimination (Copred) and the National Institute of Women (Inmujeres) expressed their worry on the singling out and discrimination of women due to their appearance and being out on the street at night.
In a transmission via Periscope las Wednesday, the public official tried to refer two women allegedly exercizing prostitution to the civic judge, telling them to accompany him on supposed violations of Article 24 of the capital’s Law of Civic Culture.
The two women, however, indicated that the official did not have any proof of supposed breaches of regulation and they were not exercizing prostitution.
On the subject, government departments considered that the fact that a woman is standing on the street wearing clothing that show her body, is not a reason to consider that she is committing a fault, according to the Law of Civic Culture of Mexico City.
They stated that women have a right to transit freely trough the streets with the clothing they prefer without being sexually aggressed or insulted, be this within the public space or in social media.
The agencies stressed that it is an obligation of public servants to foster respect of the law and human rights, with the purpose of advancing towards the change of attitudes that violate the principles of equality and non discrimination.
Currently, the Human Rights Commission of Mexico City initiated an ex officio complaint for the transmission of the raid via Periscope undertaken by the City Manager, which adds up to the eight complaints in relation to the use of social media in the Miguel Hidalgo Borough.
