Former president welcomes government's decision to ignore comments about US-Mexico border wall

MEXICO CITY – Former Mexican President Felipe Calderón praised the decision of President Enrique Peña Nieto’s government to ignore Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s comments about U.S.-Mexico border wall.

“The intervention of the government in the electoral process of the United States can be, in one hand reckless and counterproductive in the other. I think is fine that the Mexican government continues being cautious,” Calderón said.

Calderón approved the move of the current administration and said the Mexican government should not intervene in the U.S. electoral process, although he added Trump is dangerous not only for the Mexican citizens, but for the world itself.

The former president said Trump’s words can create and promote hate to the U.S. citizens around the world and compared the Republican presidential candidate’s speech with Adolf Hitler’s ideology. He said Trump’s ideas support the existance of a superior white race and condemn the immigrants because of their skin color.

“Donald Trump is promoting hate to the United States across the world. We live in a neighborhood called Planet Earth and Trump is turning the United States in a neighbor that will be hated and rejected by the rest.”

Calderón said Mexico is not paying a single cent for Trump’s “stupid border wall.”

The ex-president also expressed support to the expenditure cuts announced by the Treasury and Public Credit Secretary (SHCP) aimed to maintain the nation’s macroeconomic stability. He said the move helped to stop the constant increments in the dollar-peso exchange rate.
