MEXICO CITY – The teachers who have scored the highest grades in the Teacher’s Performance Assessment will see a 35 percent increase in their salary by the end of February.
The results of the evaluation will be made public by the last week of February and the increase in salaries will be retroactive by Feb. 15.
Aurelio Nuño Mayer, head of the Public Education Secretariat (SEP), said, “We are finishing up the last revisions, so that the results we present have no mistakes.”
The results which will be announced involve only teachers who were evaluated between November and December 2015. Those who performed the evaluation extemporaneously will know their results at a later date.
As for the results from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) regarding the performance of teachers in Mexico, Nuño said that it “confirms the urgent need for an education reform.”
“In the performance levels that we have in the whole region, including Mexico, we have the best results. This doesn’t mean that we’re doing fine and to me it seems like this report confirms the need for an educational reform,” he said.
Nuño said that in countries where important changes have been made in education, it took 10 years.
“For the countries that have succeeded, for example, to considerably raise the OECD points, at least a decade passed from the moment that they made the educational reforms or changes to the moment that there were significant increases,” he said.
