Ángela Buitrago, member of the Group of International Experts (GIEI), met with the special prosecutor for human rights of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), Eber Omar Betanzos, to try to clarify positions.
The private meeting comes a day after the GIEI made a statement saying that they had lost confidence in the PGR. The GIEI said that the PGR had broken an agreement between the two bodies by releasing the opinion by fire experts that 17 bodies had been burned at the Cocula dump.
The topics to be discussed at the meeting were not clarified.
This Friday, there will be a meeting between the PGR, the GIEI and the fire forensic scientists, where it will be decided if investigations into the Cocula dump will continue.
The GIEI accused the PGR of having mischaracterized the opinion of the fire experts as a final report, when in fact it was a preliminary, inconclusive set of opinions. The PGR claimed that the report indeed was conclusive, and that all that is left to be determined is if all or just some of the 43 students were burned at the dump.
However, the GIEI’s mandate obliges them to coordinate with the PRG in their investigation, but the mandate will end on April 30. Secretary of the Interior Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong has said that he will not extend the mandate.
