What You’re Doing This Weekend in Mexico City

THURSDAY

The main Mutek Festival has taken place in Montreal since 2000, but this electronic music festival is hosting a Nano MUTEK festival in Mexico City, which will take place at Foro Normandie located at López 15 in the Historic Center. It starts at 10 p.m. and tickets start at 35o pesos.

Frida Kahlo needs no introduction, but if you haven’t seen her work up close, then attending the exhibit titled “I Paint Myself” is a must. The exhibit features 26 works owned by Museo Dolores Olmedo, as well as 10 works from private donors. The museum is located at Mexico 5843, it opens at 10 a.m. and admission is 40 pesos.

FRIDAY

To mark the 110th anniversary of the birth of Pablo O’Higgins and the 80th anniversary of the Abelardo L. Rodríguez Market built in 1934, an exhibit in Centro Cultural Casa Talavera will feature the first Jesuit constructions, early urban planning in Mexico City and plans by renown architect Antonio Múñoz. Located at Talavera 20, it will be open from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Entrance is free.

Most people are not lovers of vegan food, but what most people do love, are tortas, and in this edition of the Vegan Bazar, the theme is “vegan tortas.” The bazar will also feature other vegan dishes as well as products. The event will take place in Parque Pilares located in the del Valle neighborhood, it opens all weekend at 11:30 a.m. and entrance is free.

SATURDAY

Twelve climbing gyms across the country will open their doors to the public as part of Climbing Walls, a global event created by activewear brand The North Face. This brand wants to bring people together through climbing, no experience is necessary. Info and locations here.

It’s fair to say that there is no shortage of tacos and beer in Mexico City, however, let’s be honest, you can never have too much. So, say hi to the Taco and Artisanal Beer Festival in the Huerto Roma Verde featuring four different themed areas for food and drink, as well as an area where live bands will be playing both Saturday and Sunday. The event starts at 11 a.m. Entrance is free.

Mapping in Coyoacán offers an opportunity to see images projected onto the facade of a building. The effect cheats the eye with elaborate constructions and presentations. The event will take place at the Parroquia de San Juan Bautista in Coyoacán. It starts at 7 p.m. and is free.

SUNDAY

Mexican brands and independent producers will be present at the 24th edition of the Púrpura Bazar. Producers will offer everything from fashion, food, to beauty products. The bazar is located at Jalapa 90, it starts at 12 p.m. and entrance is free.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Huasco de Ocampo: Mexico has a lot of aptly named “magical villages,” and Huasca de Ocampo in the state Hidalgo is a great option for a weekend getaway. This town is full of haciendas like Santa María Regla and San Miguel Regla that date back to colonial times as well as natural wonders like the basaltic prisms and landscapes that have inspired many local and international artists.
