What You’re Doing This Weekend in Mexico City

THURSDAY

Every month, our friends at DEAR choose an artist, photographer or designer to present their work at El 123 restaurant in the Historic Center. This month, UK-born Liam O’Connor will be putting on a show for cinephiles, inspired by mobile camera obscuras. See the show, and then eat some yummy food.

FRIDAY

Teatro Bar El Vicio will be putting on a political satire for the ages. Cecilia Sotres plays Peña Miento and Andrés Carreño plays Donass Trump, competing to see who is the worse president. The show starts at 10:30 p.m. Tickets are 400 pesos and you can buy them here.

SATURDAY

If you’ve yet to fully acquaint yourself with the city, join the tour through the Historic Center this Saturday. The tour, which begins at 11:30 a.m., will depart from the corner of Pino Suárez and Repúblic de Salvador and stop off at the José de Gracia Temple and the Plaza de la Aguilita. Other tours depart on Sunday and then again the following weekend to other locations. Tickets are 90 pesos.

A workshop aimed at curators, researchers and general cinephiles will explore experimental Latin American cinema this weekend. The workshop, inspired by Tacita Dean’s work, will take place at Museo Tamayo at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are 300 pesos.

SUNDAY

Calling all feline friends and their lovers: this weekend you’ll have a space to socialize and eat food! Head over to the Feline Festival at Cat Café La Gatería in Roma at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Entrance is free, the only cost is the yummy goodies you buy for you and your kitty.

The Chinese New Year begins Jan. 28 this year. The Mexico City government, the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Cultural Center will be collaborating on an event to prepare for the celebrations. Bring your bicycles to the Angel of Independence, and sign up for the youth or adult category to join a decoration competition. There will also be performances and art displays for those who would rather relax. Festivities start at 8 a.m. and entrance is free.
