Deputies from the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) and the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) called the fine leveled against the Spanish company OHL by the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV) “insufficient” and “a joke,” and urged authorities not to close the case so that the individuals responsible can be brought to justice.

Javier Nava Palacios, spokesperson for the PRD, and Rocío Nahle, from Morena, said that the 72 million-peso fine against OHL is a slap on the wrist, considering the millions of pesos that OHL has made through contracts in Mexico.

Nava said that the authorities should keep investigating the case and punish all of the government officials who were involved.

In an interview, the legislator from San Luis Potosí said that the fine against OHL should not mean that the case is over.

He emphasized that the fine is very small, considering the billions of pesos that OHL has made in Mexico, and complained that the law is applied selectively for acts of corruption.

“I think that it is insufficient, I think that the authorities leave a lot to be desired, not only in this case but also in other cases involving OHL, and other companies, like the Mexico-Querétaro train, like all the corruption cases in this country. So, I think that it is insufficient, it is a slap on the wrist, it is even less than a slap on the wrist. These companies have made millions and millions of pesos from contracts in Mexico. They should be severely punished, and not just sanctioned with small fines that don’t affect them at all, that don’t have any real consequences for them.”

Nahle thinks that the 72 million-peso fine for OHL is “a joke.”

“What they did was very serious, and now we hear the fine is only 72 million pesos. OHL made 4 billion pesos this year. This fine is a very minor punishment that will allow OHL, a company with a record of corruption, to continue soliciting infrastructure contacts in Mexico.”
